Urban Transitions Conference: 4-7.11.2024
The issues faced by contemporary cities are among the most significant challenges confronting the modern world. Urban areas struggle with numerous difficulties related to both the natural environment and the impacts of climate change. Poor urban planning exacerbates these problems at an accelerated pace. A thoughtful, sustainable, and comprehensive approach to shaping urban spaces holds immense potential for improving quality of life and reducing the negative environmental impact of cities.
The recurring scientific congress organized by Elsevier, titled Urban Transitions, bridges science and practice, outlining directions for creating low-emission, friendly, equitable, and healthy cities. The congress aims to present issues concerning modern cities, addressing both their challenges and opportunities to create spaces that benefit both people and the environment.
This year, the congress took place in Sitges from November 4 -7, 2024, and covered the following topics:
- Cities (concepts, theory, practice)
- Land use and transport (interrelations, planning, design, and engineering)
- Planning, environment, and health (epidemiology, health impacts)
- Nature-based solutions (NBSs)/green cities
- Justice and inequality
- Engagement, influence, and education
This year’s congress brought together 550 participants, including researchers and practitioners in urban planning. The FOCUSE team, comprising Dr. Alicja Krzemińska and Dr. Anna Zaręba, presented two posters:
- “Underground Food Farms as a Climate Alternative Form of Urban Agriculture”
- “Microsolutions in Food Production in Cities Supporting the Vision of 15-Minute Self-Sufficient Cities”
