1st International Life Cycle Assessment Symposium Management for Food Production. FOCUSE project meetinj
On June 4–5, the FOCUSE team participated in a meeting in Barcelona dedicated to summarizing the progress of the project, held in conjunction with an international conference: the 1st International Life Cycle Assessment Symposium Towards Circular Water and Nutrient Management for Food Production, organized by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
The conference focused on the critical issue of access to safe, affordable, local, and sustainable food in the face of escalating environmental crises.
The symposium brought together researchers and practitioners working in the field of the circular economy to discuss emerging forms of food production and methods for their evaluation. The main themes of the conference included:
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of circular water management: case studies on the use of treated wastewater in urban agriculture, rainwater harvesting in cities, and innovative technologies for water treatment and reuse.
- LCA of nutrient recovery: examples of compost application and nutrient recovery technologies from urban wastewater treatment plants.
- Impacts of circular strategies on water, soil, and human health: integration of micropollutants and microplastics in LCA, and soil health indicators in the assessment of local food production.
- LCA of circular urban agriculture: vertical farms, community gardens, and agriculture integrated with architecture.
